Dieting Chart After Gastric Bypass Surgery

When you get your gastric bypass surgery you will have a new stomach that only holds about three tablespoons of food at a time. You will gradually stretch you stomach so that it holds a cup to a cup and a half of food when you eat. Initially though your stomach will be very small and it will be easily upset. This is why you absolutely need to go on a special diet starting from the moment you wake up after surgery.
You start off with liquids while in the hospital. These will be clear liquids like broth, Jell-O, juice and water. Believe me you may be thinking now that this is not appetizing or filling, but when you wake up you will feel differently. You will also be very thirsty and ice will do wonders for your pains
If this goes well you can move up to something called full liquids. These are your breakfast shakes or weight watchers drinks. They have lots of protein which your body needs at this time. You should also start taking chewable vitamins as well to supplement your diet.
When you’ve been on full liquids for about two weeks you can start on a soft diet of pureed and easy to chew foods. This can include blenderized meats, baby food, and soft cheeses. You can make up lots of pureed soups to eat during this time. It is important to make sure that you chew everything very thoroughly or that its already a blenderized consistency after the gastric bypass.
After all of this from your gastric bypass you finally get to return to solid foods at about eight weeks. You can eat your five food groups but make sure to start off with protein with each meal. Also to make sure that you don’t fill up too fast or digest too quickly you’ll be instructed to drink your liquids in between your meals.
